Unfailing Power of God's Word

A few years ago I found myself in an extremely hopeless, and traumatic situation. I was living a life that was so far from the will of God. Today, I doubt that I would still be alive if it wasn’t for God who stepped in and rescued me. He brought a word, and it changed my life forever. At this point I had turned my back on God for about three years, and I was starting to believe that no one had ever loved me. The devil whispered these lies in my ears every single day, and the events that unfolded in my life seemed to confirm this. Both of my parents left when I was a little girl, and my life had been marked with one failed relationship after the other. I found myself in yet another abusive relationship – this one was probably the most severe of them all – and I began to contemplate suicide after coming to the conclusion that I was unloved. One day, I spent an entire day crying in my room. I was definitely feeling very sorry for myself. Some hours later, I began to experience a supernatural courage building up inside of me. Somehow, someone was telling me to stop crying, and not to give up. I looked around my room and saw a pen and a paper, and I remembered the times that I would write letters to God as a little girl. So I grabbed the pen and paper, and with tears streaming down my face, I began to write. “Dear God, please help me.” In this letter, I was trying to find something worth living for. Word after word, sentence after sentence, page after page. The supernatural courage within me enabled me to keep going, until I finally found it. I wrote the words, “Love never fails”. Friends, it was like the brightest lightbulb went on in the darkest of places. Three simple words, and yet God used them to break through every chain that I was bound in. It was 1 Corinthians 13:8 that set me free. In this moment, I knew that God was with me, and that he loved me with an unfailing love. It was this unfailing love of God that I truly needed, and it gave me the courage to get back up, and fight against the whiles of the devil. Today, I am walking in dominion. It all started with a word from God. Psalm 33:6 says that, “The Lord created the heavens by his command, the sun, the moon, and stars by his spoken word.” Here, the Psalmist takes us all the way back to Genesis, and reminds us of the mighty power of God’s word. The same God who spoke the world into being, is speaking over you and I. Everything began with God’s word, and it still does. Can you believe that? In Matthew 24:35, Jesus says that “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.” God’s word is the absolute truth, and it is everlasting. For a long time in my life, I would open the bible, and close it without truly grasping the mighty power and impact that God’s word can have in transforming my life. It was because I did not believe in the words that I read. One can open the bible, read about the miracles that Jesus performed, and believe that this happened 2000 years ago, but when it comes to scriptures that tell us that we would perform greater signs than these, then our faith begins to rock the boat a little. The good news is that the word of God can even help us with our unbelief. How amazing is that? Romans 10:17 says that, “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” God has given each of us a measure of faith, and reading the word of God will certainly reveal the measure of faith that you truly have. However, a greater measure of faith needs to be cultivated by hearing the word of Christ. Hearing the word comes from speaking the word, and speaking comes by reading the word of course. I encourage you to open up the bible, and believe what you read. Meditate on a piece of scripture, until it cultivates a greater measure of faith within you. Until you know that you know that you know. The bible is not a bunch of words, paragraphs and sentences on paper that we read for encouragement. The author is God himself, and each word is breathed with power from the Holy Spirit. When you read God’s word, it is the Holy Spirit that is at work in you to make the scripture come alive, and transform you into the image of Christ. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”) Hebrews 4:12 says that, “the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” You’ve probably heard the saying, “Whilst you are reading the word, the word is reading you”, and this is true. God’s word is able to lay bare the parts of you that you are not even aware of. It has the ability to separate the layers that is in you, and get right down to the deepest truth of what needs to be dealt with. Psalm 119:105 says that, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” If you need direction, go to God’s word. I could tell you endless stories of how God’s word directed me in situations that seemed to have no resolution in the natural. The bible says that if you need wisdom, God will give it to you without reproach. God’s word will give you all the wisdom you need to make decisions in your life, and you will always experience his peace, because you know that your decision was made with wisdom from heaven. Godly wisdom trumps human wisdom by far! Isaiah 55:11 says, “So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me void (useless, without result), Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” God’s word will never return empty! Friend, all you have to do is believe. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for the gift of your word. Today, I choose to prioritise reading your word in my life. Please remove any distractions and help me to reorder my life so that I will spend my time in your word, and not on things of the world. For I know and understand that the world cannot fulfil me, or cultivate fruitfulness. I know that all the answers I will ever need, are found in your word. Please ignite in me a hunger for your word, and help me with any areas of unbelief so that I am able to receive your word in its fulness. I pray this in Jesus mighty name, Amen.
