Small steps great firsts

Day 6: God First

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”

Zechariah 4:10 NLT

As someone who has experienced the pain and joy of starting a business, I often see many people come to me with great and awesome ideas but yet somehow they can end up failing to start the business because they listen to other people who discourage them in different ways or they discourage themselves by comparing themselves with other people and how they started their business.

I have also seen people give up on their newly born business because they are comparing their start-up with businesses that have been in existence for years.

Comparison can get us to abandon what God is asking us to get started on. Just like you cannot compare a 6 month baby with a 3 year old baby, so you should not try and compare how you are doing In a new venture with someone who started their own venture many years before you.

It can be the same with putting God First. You have to get started, do not compare your journey of seeking God with other people, keep your eyes on God. Yes we can learn from the testimony of others but our journey should not become a competition of who is doing the most difficult fast or spending longer hours in worship and prayer.

Many of us in life get discouraged with where we are because we see our friends doing better in terms of getting married before us or buying a car or owning a house or even having a "better" relationship with God than us.

Comparison steals away from what God is trying to start in your own life. Remember that some people's beginnings are longer than others just like it takes longer to build the foundations of a 40 storey skyscraper as *compared* to the foundations of a small wooden log cabin.

The best place to appreciate your beginnings or your Foundations is to go to the master builder, God (psalms 127:1), ask him what type of a building he is building in your life.

The next thing is to trust the master builder of your life. Trust that he will'

1. build with progress,

2. build with the right process and

3. build with direction and aim for completion.

Reflect:

When have I been impatient with God laying foundations in my life as I compared with what he is doing in other people's lives?

How does impatience distract me from putting God first?

*Prayer:*

Heavenly Father, I submit my thoughts and my mind and my heart to you. Please help me not to be overcome by comparing my small beginnings. Help me to enter the place of Gratitude and appreciate that my season is very different from other people's seasons because of the unique purpose you have for me. Help me not to be stuck by comparing to my peers as the trap of comparison deceives me into thinking that anyone close to age with me is in the same season of life as me.

Thank you that the Holy Spirit will guide me accordingly in this regard as I remain rooted to your word. *AMEN*
